Chiropractic

Do I need a referral to see a chiropractor?

Chiropractors are primary healthcare providers and no referral is requirred to visit a chiropractor.

Is chiropractic suitable for children?

A commonly asked question and the answer is YES, DEFINATELY.  Children especially when very young are going through the most important part of their development.

Everyday they are exposed to new things which impact on the body's learning.  The nervous system is responsible for bringing all of the information from the outside world via the senses to the brain.  (over the first few years of life a childs brain increases to 90% of the size of an adults brain largely due to an increased number of connections between cells which are created through their interactions with everything around them.)

Children are also extremely prone to falls and other injuries as they learn boundaries and limitations.  These injuries put stress on the body and may cause subluxations that interfere with the nervous system.

Just as each person requires a different approach, adjustments are modified to suit each child.  Their body's are extremely impressionable and only require a light adjustment to correct subluxation.

One of the first times a child may have a subluxation is during the birthing process, so it is never too early to get their spine checked.

Is chiropractic safe?

Chiropractic is sometimes wrongly associated with being unsafe.  Current research continues to show that chiropractic has a very good safety record.

The main concern is that adjustments to the neck may give rise to a stroke or stroke like symptoms.  The research shows that you have the same chance of having a stroke no matter if you see a GP or a chiropractor.  The reason for this is that a person who is developing an arterial disection is likely to have neck pain and so seeks help.  Whether the person sees a health provider or not the process is already occuring that will lead to a stroke.

Your health professional is trained to look out for signs that a stroke is beginning to occur and will take the appropriate steps to ensure you receive the best care.

Adjustments to the neck still have the potential to cause harm if performed incorrectly.  It is therfore extremely important you only allow health providers who are properly trained in performing these to do so.

It is important that your health provider discusses with you any risk of treatment you may receive and if you have any concerns you should always ask for further information, clarification or alternate options.

Is chiropractic care covered by ACC?

ACC cover some healthcare costs when an injury has occurred no matter if it was at home, at work or anywhere else.  Your chiropractor will get the details of the injury and make an assessment.  This information will be sent to ACC for approval.

If you already have cover from ACC for an injury then you are not required to make a new application.  Your chiropractor will however still make their own assessments.
